A lifelong Idaho resident, Janet Schlarbaum currently lives in White Bird, ID, but she was born in 1941 in Mountain Home, ID. After graduating from high school in 1959, Janet Schlarbaum attended cosmetology school. After her matriculation in 1960, Janet married her high school sweetheart, Burton “Burt” Schlarbaum and the two moved north of Boise to White Bird, where she opened her own beauty parlor, A Touch of Class. In 1962, Burt, a Private in the US Army, was enlisted to fight in the Vietnam War. Janet, pregnant at the time with the Schlarbaums’ first child, was worried, but knew she had to keep working to keep her sanity. Burt Schlarbaum remained in the military for another two years, but retired with an honorable discharge in 1964. By then the Schlarbaums’ son, Avery, was already walking, and Janet’s salon was thriving. Over the next 10 years, the Schlarbaums had 3 more children: Emily, Roger, and Simon. Today, Janet Schlarbaum is the proud grandmother of nine beautiful grandchildren and one great grandson. Janet Schlarbaum has always had a strong work ethic, but has an even stronger appreciation for family. In 2004, after 40 years of cutting and styling hair, Janet Schlarbaum closed the doors to A Touch of Class to provide daycare to her new great-grandson, Cason, while his mother Ruby, Janet’s granddaughter, attends college. Though she is technically retired, “retirement” has not slowed Janet Schlarbaum down. She still does hair in her kitchen for her neighbors every week, and has many hobbies, including knitting, needlepoint, and quilting. She is a member of the Red Hat Society, a local bridge club, and a book club. Janet Schlarbaum also enjoys gardening, hiking, power walking, traveling, horseback riding, racquetball, and raising kittens, a hobby she became interested in when her children were little.
